PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam group that acts by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, thus exerting anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiexudative, and antipyretic effects. Reduces leukocyte infiltration into inflamed tissue. It also inhibits, but to a lesser degree, collagen-induced platelet aggregation. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that meloxicam inhibits cyclooxygenase 2 (COX 2) to a greater extent than cyclooxygenase 1 (COX 1).

INTERACTIONS AND INCOMPATIBILITIES

  • Other NSAIDs, diuretics, anticoagulants, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and substances with high protein affinity may compete for binding and produce toxic effects. This veterinary medicinal product must not be administered together with other NSAIDs or glucocorticosteroids.

  • Pre-treatment with anti-inflammatory substances may produce additional or increased adverse reactions, therefore, before starting treatment, a treatment-free period of at least 24 hours should be established with such veterinary drugs.

  • In any case, the treatment-free period should take into account the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs used previously.

INDICATIONS

Dogs and Cats: Relief of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Do not use in dogs with gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and bleeding, liver, heart or kidney dysfunction, and bleeding disorders.

  • Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

  • Do not use in dogs less than 6 weeks.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

  • Typical adverse reactions to NSAIDs such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, occult bleeding in the faeces, apathy and renal failure have been reported occasionally.

  • Very rarely, bloody diarrhea, hematemesis, gastrointestinal ulceration, and elevated liver enzymes have been reported.

These adverse reactions generally occur within the first week of treatment, are mostly transient and disappear upon termination of treatment, although in very rare cases they may be serious or fatal.

ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION

Orally.
