Composition:
Acepromazine maleate 17 mg (equivalent to 12,5 mg acepromazine base). Excipient qs for
1 tablet.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacological properties: The active substance in Calmivet, acepromazine, belongs to the group of
the phenothiazines. Phenothiazines have a depressant action on the central nervous system.
This action is probably linked in part to receptor antagonism.

The depth of sedation is dose dependent and can vary greatly from one individual to another.

Do not administer to animals undergoing treatment with organophosphates as they enhance their toxic effects.

• Epilepsy.
• Pregnancy and lactation.
• Contraindicated in cats with liver failure due to the hepatotoxic nature of the specialty.

In general, cats have more adverse effects and more frequently than dogs.
Thus, the most frequent adverse reactions that can appear in both species are:
• Hypothermia, hypotension (which will cause reflex tachycardia and weak pulse), slight increase in
heart rate, hyperglycemia, thrombocytopenia and/or platelet dysfunction, fainting, and collapse
cardiovascular disease, vomiting, anxiolysis and profound depression in dogs (with daily doses greater than 10
mg/kg).

• Significantly decreased motor activity, hyperactivity and aggression (even at low doses),
signs of analgesia (at high doses), sphincter relaxation, polydipsia, excitement, disturbances

Orally.
Posology
Dogs: Antiemetic and tranquilizer: 0,75 tablets/10 kg.
Sedative: 1,5 to 3 tablets/10 kg.
Cats: Antiemetic: 1,2 tablets/10 kg. Soothing: 0,75 to 1,5 tablets/10 kg.
Sedative: 1,5 tablets/10 kg.
• Calmivet Tablets should be administered 1 hour before the trip or stressful situation and can
repeat administration 6 hours later.
• The presence or absence of effect is detected by the existence or absence of profusion of the
nictitating membrane.
• The maximum recommended dose is 5 mg/kg in dogs (equivalent to 3 tablets/10 kg body weight).
