Composition per Capsule:

  • Atopica® 25 mg: Cyclosporine 25 mg.
  • Atopica® 50 mg: Cyclosporine 50 mg.
  • Atopica® 100 mg: Cyclosporine 100 mg.

Indications and Use

Target Species:

Dogs.

Therapeutic Indication:

  • Treatment of manifestations of chronic atopic dermatitis, including persistent itching and inflammation of the skin.

Dosage and Administration

Recommended dose:

5 mg/kg of body weight . Administer the capsule directly into the dog's mouth at least 2 hours before or after meals.

Dog Weight (kg) Recommended dose
4 – <7,5 kg 1 capsule of Atopica® 25 mg.
7,5 – <15 kg 1 capsule of Atopica® 50 mg.
15 – <29 kg 1 capsule of Atopica® 100 mg.
29 – <36 kg 1 capsule of Atopica® 100 mg + 1 capsule of Atopica® 50 mg.
36 – <55 kg 2 capsules of Atopica® 100 mg.

Treatment Scheme:

  1. Early stage:
    Administer daily until clinical improvement is observed (normally in 4 weeks). If there is no improvement in 8 weeks, discontinue treatment.
  2. Maintenance:
    • Reduce the frequency of administration to alternate days.
    • In some cases, dosing may be every 3-4 days.
  3. Restarting Treatment:
    • If symptoms recur, resume daily treatment.
    • Some pets may require consecutive cycles of treatment.

Additional Recommendation:

To improve results, consider complementary treatments such as medicated shampoos and essential fatty acid supplements.

Contraindications:

  • Do not use on:
    • Dogs under 18 years old 6 months or with weight less than 2 kg.
    • Animals with a history of malignant tumors.
    • Cases of hypersensitivity to cyclosporine or its excipients.
    • Vaccination with live vaccines during treatment or 2 weeks before/after.

Drug Interactions:

  • Cyclosporine levels increase:
    • Ketoconazole (increases up to 5 times).
    • Erythromycin (doubles plasma levels).
  • Reduce cyclosporine levels:
    • Anticonvulsants and antibiotics such as trimethoprim/sulfadimidine.
  • Caution with:
    • Macrocyclic lactones (eg, ivermectin, milbemycin) due to risk of CNS toxicity.
    • Aminoglycoside antibiotics and trimethoprim due to possible nephrotoxicity.

Note: Dosage adjustment based on veterinary evaluation.

Side effects:

  • Frequent:
    • Vomiting, diarrhea, loose or mucous stools (mild and transient).
  • Less Common:
    • Lethargy, hyperactivity, anorexia.
    • Gingival hyperplasia (mild to moderate).
    • Changes in coat, wart-like lesions.
    • Redness and swelling of the earlobe.
  • Rare Reactions:
    • Lymphadenopathy, muscle cramps.

In case of persistent or severe adverse reactions, consult your veterinarian.

Special Precautions

In Animals:

  • Confirm diagnosis and rule out other causes of dermatitis (eg, food allergy, flea infestations).
  • Monitor for bacterial and fungal infections before and during treatment.
  • Monitor for lymphadenopathy or signs of renal failure in severe cases.
  • Avoid use in diabetic dogs.

In People:

  • Wash hands after administration.
  • Avoid direct contact with the capsules if you are pregnant.
  • In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.

Conservation Mode:

  • Store at a temperature below 25 °C.
  • Keep the capsules in the blister inside the original packaging.
