FUNGICONAZOLE

Systemic antifungals, derivatives of imidazole.

INTERACTIONS AND INCOMPATIBILITIES

• Do not administer with antacids and/or H2-receptor antagonists (cimetidine/ranitidine) or with proton pump inhibitors (eg omeprazole), since the absorption of ketoconazole may be modified (absorption requires an acidic medium). ).
• Ketoconazole is a substrate and a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome P3 enzyme 4A450 (CYP3A4). It can reduce the elimination of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, with the consequent alteration of their plasmatic concentrations. Inducers of cytochrome P450 may increase the rate of metabolism of ketoconazole. Relevant veterinary interactions include cyclosporins, macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, selamectin, milbemycin), midazolam, cisapride, amlodipine, fentanyl, macrolides (clarithromycin, erythromycin), digoxin, anticoagulants, and phenobarbital.
• Ketoconazole inhibits the conversion of cholesterol to cortisol and may therefore affect trilostane/mitotane dosing in dogs concomitantly treated for hyperadrenocorticism.

INDICATIONS

Dogs: Treatment of dermatomycosis due to the following dermatophytes: Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

• Do not administer to animals with liver failure.
• Do not administer to animals with known hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

• In rare cases, neurological symptoms (apathy, ataxia, tremors), liver toxicity, vomiting, anorexia, and/or diarrhea may be seen at standard doses.
• Ketoconazole has antiandrogenic and antiglucocorticoid effects; inhibits the conversion of cholesterol to steroid hormones such as testosterone and cortisol in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Orally.

POSOLOGY

Dogs:

Fungiconazole 200 mg: 10 mg of ketoconazole per kg of body weight per day, administered orally. This corresponds to 1 tablet per 20 kg of body weight per day.

Fungiconazole 400 mg: 10 mg of ketoconazole per kg of body weight per day, administered orally. This corresponds to 1 tablet per 40 kg of body weight per day.

• It is recommended to take samples from the animal once a month during treatment and suspend the administration of antifungals after two negative cultures.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Special precautions for use in animals:

• The treatment of dermatophytoses should not be limited to the treatment of infected animals. It must also include the disinfection of the environment, since the spores can survive in it for long periods of time. Other measures such as frequent vacuuming, disinfection of grooming equipment, and removal of all potentially contaminated material that cannot be disinfected will minimize the risk of reinfection or spread of infection.
• The combination of topical and systemic treatment is recommended.
• In case of long-term treatment administration, liver function should be closely monitored. If clinical signs suggesting the development of hepatic dysfunction appear, treatment should be stopped immediately.

Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals:

• People with known hypersensitivity to the active substances should avoid all skin and mucous membrane contact with the veterinary medicinal product.
• In case of accidental ingestion, consult a doctor immediately and show him the package leaflet or the label.
• Wash hands after use.
• Split tablets (halves/quarters) should be kept in the original blister pack and used for the next administration. Keep the blister in the outer carton to prevent children from accessing it.
