Adverse reactions (frequency and seriousness)

Gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting, diarrhea and oesophagitis have been reported as adverse effects after doxycycline therapy.

In very young animals, pigmentation of the teeth can be produced by the formation of a complex of tetracycline and calcium phosphate.

After exposure to strong sunlight, hypersensitivity reactions, photosensitivity reactions and, in rare cases, photodermatitis may occur.

It is known that the use of other tetracyclines causes a delay in skeletal growth in young animals (reversible after discontinuation of therapy). This delay can also occur after doxycycline administration.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy and lactation. Tetracyclines as a class can retard fetal skeletal development (fully reversible), and cause pigmentation of deciduous teeth. However, evidence from the literature in people suggests that doxycycline is less likely to cause these abnormalities than other tetracyclines. Use only in accordance with the benefit/risk assessment carried out by the responsible veterinarian.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction

Do not administer concomitantly with other bactericidal antibiotics, such as penicillins and cephalosporins. Oral adsorbents and substances containing multivalent cations, such as antacids and iron salts, should not be used within 3 hours before or 3 hours after doxycycline administration. The half-life of doxycycline is reduced by concomitant administration of antiepileptics, such as phenobarbital or phenytoin.

Dosage and route of administration

Oral use.

The recommended dose for dogs is 10 mg of doxycycline per kg of body weight per day. In most common cases, the response occurs after 5 to 7 days of treatment. Therapy should be continued for an additional 2 to 3 days after clinical cure of acute infections. In chronic or resistant cases, treatment can be extended up to 14 days. In dogs with interstitial nephritis secondary to leptospirosis, treatment is recommended for 14 days. For the dose to be correct, it is necessary to determine the body weight as accurately as possible in order to avoid underdosing. Administer the tablets with food.

The tablets can be divided into 2 or 4 equal parts to ensure an exact dose. Place the tablet on a flat surface, with the scored side facing up and the convex (rounded) side facing the surface.

2 equal parts: press down with your thumbs placed on either side of the tablet.

4 equal parts: press down with your thumb placed in the center of the tablet.

Overdosage (symptoms, emergency measures, antidotes), if necessary

In case of overdose, the expected symptoms are those mentioned in section 4.6.
