What is Chanhold and what is it used for?

Chanhold is a topical antiparasitic containing selamectin, a compound of the avermectin class. Selamectin works by paralyzing and killing a variety of parasites, both internal and external. It is used for:

• Filariasis (Dirofilaria immitis): Prevention of filariasis (heartworm) by monthly administration. It can be safely administered to animals infected with adult forms of the parasite, although it is recommended to examine them beforehand to determine the presence of adult forms. It is not effective against adult forms of D. immitis.
• Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis): Treatment of ear acariasis. Do not apply directly to the ear canal.
• Lice (Felicola subrostratus in cats and Trichodectes canis in dogs): Treatment of lice infestations.
• Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in dogs: Treatment of sarcoptic mange.

How to use Chanhold?

Chanhold is applied topically to the skin at the base of the neck, in front of the shoulder blades. The dosage and frequency of administration will depend on the animal's weight and the parasite being treated. It is essential to follow the veterinarian's instructions.

Is Chanhold safe for my pet?

It is safe for cats and dogs older than 6 weeks , but please note these precautions:

• Contraindications: Do not use in animals under 6 weeks of age, sick, weakened or underweight animals, or in case of hypersensitivity to selamectin or any excipient.
• Warnings: Animals may be bathed 2 hours after treatment without loss of efficacy. Do not apply if the hair is wet. For ear acariasis, do not apply directly into the ear canal. It is important to apply the indicated dose to minimize licking; if it occurs, brief hypersalivation may be observed in cats.
• Special precautions: This medicine should only be applied to the skin. Keep treated animals away from fire for at least 30 minutes after application. Do not smoke, eat or drink while handling the product. Wash hands after use and avoid contact with eyes. Avoid direct contact with treated animals until the application area is dry. Do not allow treated animals to bathe in water courses for up to two hours after treatment.

What side effects can Chanhold cause?

Rarely, it may cause:

• Alopecia (hair loss) or mild irritation in the application area.
• Hypersalivation (drooling) in cats.
• Clumping of hair or white powder at the application site.
• Reversible neurological signs (very rarely).
