If your cat meows, becomes agitated, or vomits on every car ride, your veterinarian may recommend CALMIVET 20 Tablets . Each tablet in this 20-tablet pack contains 17 mg of acepromazine maleate (equivalent to 12,5 mg of acepromazine base). Manufactured by Vétoquinol, it is presented as a tranquilizer, sedative, and antiemetic for dogs and cats.
For what do you use it
According to the package insert, the antiemetic use is limited to vomiting caused by motion sickness, that is, from travel. It also helps calm the animal in stressful situations. Acepromazine is a phenothiazine: it depresses the central nervous system, and the sedation varies considerably from one animal to another.
How it is presented
- Active ingredient: acepromazine maleate, 17 mg per tablet.
- Format: oral tablet, pack of 20 tablets.
- Target species: dogs and cats.
- Usual sedative effect: 4 to 8 hours, and up to 12 in some animals.
How it is administered
The manufacturer recommends taking the tablet orally one hour before travel or the stressful situation, repeating it six hours later. The dosage is calculated by weight: in cats, 1,2 tablets per 10 kg as an antiemetic and 0,75 to 1,5 tablets per 10 kg as a tranquilizer. The veterinarian will adjust the dosage and adhere to the manufacturer's maximum recommended dose.
FAQ
What trips is CALMIVET 20 Tablets suitable for?
For journeys where vomiting is due to motion sickness or stress. If the vomiting has another cause, this is not the right product: consult a veterinarian first.
Do cats tolerate it the same way as dogs?
The package insert warns that cats experience more frequent and more adverse effects, such as hyperactivity or aggression, even at low doses. Observe your cat after administration.
When should it not be used?
The laboratory contraindicates it in hypovolemic hypotension, decompensated heart failure, epilepsy, pregnancy and lactation, allergy to phenothiazines and, in cats, hepatic insufficiency.
Can it be combined with other medications?
Its depressant effect is increased by morphine, barbiturates, or xylazine, and antihypertensive drugs may potentiate the drop in blood pressure. It should not be given with organophosphates.
How do I know if it has worked?
The leaflet indicates that it is detected by the protrusion of the nictitating membrane, the third eyelid. If you notice fainting or collapse, contact your veterinarian.
Before the first dose, discuss your pet's weight and health with your veterinarian.
