Budgie care: everything the most popular pet bird needs

The budgerigar ( Melopsittacus undulatus ) is the world's most popular pet bird, and with good reason: it's intelligent, social, relatively easy to care for, and can learn to talk and bond well with people. With proper care, it can live between 10 and 15 years.

Cage: bigger than you think

The cage should be large enough for the budgie to flap its wings without touching the sides. The minimum recommended size for one or two budgies is 60 x 40 x 50 cm (length x depth x height). The cage should be wider than it is tall (budgies fly horizontally, not vertically like larger parrots).

One or two parakeets?

Budgies are very social animals . A budgie can only be happy if it receives a lot of daily interaction with its owner. If you spend a lot of time away from home, two budgies will keep each other company. The risk with two: the bond between them can become so strong that the budgie becomes less interactive with its owner.

Food

  • Seed mix: Dietary foundation. Look for varied mixes without colorings.
  • Fresh vegetables and fruits: Carrot, spinach, apple, cucumber, broccoli. Eat small amounts daily. Wash thoroughly.
  • Mineral toy (cuttlebone): Source of calcium and element of beak wear.
  • Fresh water: Change daily.
  • Avoid: avocado (toxic), onion, chocolate, salt, alcohol, caffeine.

Time out of the cage

Budgies need time outside their cage every day to fly. A minimum of 1-2 hours in a safe space (windows closed, mirrors covered, cables protected, toxic plants removed).

Health and Veterinary

  • They need a veterinarian with experience in birds.
  • Birds instinctively hide illness (a sign of weakness in nature): when they show obvious symptoms, they are usually very sick
  • Warning signs: ruffled feathers, closed eyes during the day, change in droppings, difficulty breathing, weight loss
  • Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaciIt can be transmitted to people: always inform the veterinarian if anyone in the family has respiratory symptoms.
