VERAFLOX contains pradofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It treats wound infections caused by Staphylococcus intermedius group (including S. pseudintermedius), superficial and deep pyoderma, acute urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus intermedius group, and severe gingival and periodontal tissue infections caused by anaerobes such as Porphyromonas spp. and Prevotella spp. in dogs. In cats, it treats acute upper respiratory tract infections caused by Pasteurella multocida, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus intermedius group.
Pradofloxacin binds reversibly to bacterial DNA gyrase or DNA topoisomerase IV, selectively inhibiting these enzymes and causing rapid bacterial cell death. The speed and magnitude of the bactericidal effect are directly proportional to drug concentration. It has in vitro activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including anaerobes.
In dogs, after oral administration, pradofloxacin is absorbed rapidly (Tmax 2 hours) and almost completely (near 100%), with high tissue penetration. Elimination occurs via glucuronidation and renal excretion, with about 40% excreted unchanged in urine. In cats, absorption is rapid with Cmax 1.2 mg/L reached in 0.5 hours, and elimination primarily via glucuronidation.
