Oxytetracycline is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It diffuses through the outer membrane, uses an active carrier to cross the cytoplasmic membrane, and binds irreversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This blocks aminoacyl-tRNA binding to the acceptor site on the mRNA ribosome complex, preventing peptide chain elongation.
