The mechanism of action combines amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum bactericidal beta lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase enzymes. This causes osmotic imbalance and destroys growing bacteria. Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor with minimal intrinsic antimicrobial activity. It forms a stable enzyme molecule complex that irreversibly inhibits bacterial beta lactamases. This prevents the beta lactam ring of amoxicillin from being broken and losing activity. Clavulanic acid is destroyed during the process.
After intramuscular injection in pigs, serum concentrations of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are similar for single or repeated doses. Pharmacokinetic parameters for amoxicillin show a Tmax of 1 to 3 hours, Cmax of 2 to 3 µg/ml, and half life of 5.2 hours.
