The combination of amoxicillin (a semisynthetic penicillin) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor) expands amoxicillin's spectrum against beta-lactamase producing organisms. Amoxicillin inhibits transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase enzymes, disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis and causing osmotic destruction of growing bacteria. Clavulanic acid irreversibly inhibits beta-lactamases, forming a stable molecule-enzyme complex that prevents amoxicillin's beta-lactam ring from being broken.
Dosage is 12.50 mg per kg body weight twice daily, equivalent to 1 tablet per 40 kg per dose. Treatment should not exceed 5 to 7 days.
