The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid works by stopping bacterial cell wall synthesis. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin that inhibits transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase enzymes. This causes osmotic imbalance and destroys bacteria during growth. Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor with little intrinsic antimicrobial action. It forms a stable molecule enzyme complex that irreversibly inhibits beta lactamases, protecting amoxicillin from being broken down.
The dosage is 12.5 mg per kg body weight twice daily. For a 30 kg dog, this equals 1.5 tablets per dose. The treatment should not exceed 5 to 7 days.
Each tablet contains amoxicillin (trihydrate) 200 mg and clavulanic acid (potassium clavulanate) 50 mg.
