It treats and prevents flea infestations caused by Ctenocephalides spp., killing adults, eggs, and larvae. It also treats adult intestinal roundworms (Toxocara canis), prevents heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis), and treats chewing lice (Trichodectes canis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), and sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei).
Selamectin, the active ingredient, is a semisynthetic avermectin. It paralyzes and kills a broad range of invertebrate parasites by interfering with chloride channel conductivity, disrupting normal neurotransmission. This inhibits electrical activity in nerve cells of nematodes and muscle cells of arthropods, leading to paralysis and death.
After topical application, selamectin is absorbed through the skin and distributed systemically. It is slowly eliminated from plasma, with detectable concentrations in dogs 30 days after a single 6 mg/kg dose. This systemic persistence provides effective concentrations throughout the 30 day dosing interval.
