It treats and prevents flea infestations caused by Ctenocephalides spp., eliminating adults, eggs, and larvae. It also treats adult intestinal roundworms (Toxocara canis), chewing lice (Trichodectes canis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), and sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei). It prevents heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis).
The active ingredient selamectin is a semisynthetic avermectin. It paralyzes and kills parasites by interfering with chloride channel conductivity, disrupting normal neurotransmission. This inhibits electrical activity in nematode nerve cells and arthropod muscle cells, causing paralysis and death.
Selamectin is absorbed through the skin after topical application. It distributes systemically and is eliminated slowly from plasma, with detectable concentrations in dogs 30 days after a single 6 mg/kg dose. This persistence provides effective levels throughout the 30 day dosing interval.
