RAPIDEXON is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory and allergic processes in horses, cattle, pigs, dogs, and cats. In cattle, it also treats primary ketosis (acetonemia) and induces parturition. In horses, it treats arthritis, bursitis, or tenosynovitis.
The active substance, dexamethasone sodium phosphate, is a fluoromethyl derivative of prednisolone with potent glucocorticoid activity and minimal mineralocorticoid activity. Corticosteroids reduce the immune response by inhibiting capillary dilation, leukocyte migration and function, and phagocytosis. Glucocorticoids also increase gluconeogenesis.
Dexamethasone has 10 to 20 times the anti-inflammatory activity of prednisolone. Single high doses are usually well tolerated, but prolonged administration can cause serious adverse reactions. For medium to long term treatment, doses should be reduced to the minimum necessary to control clinical signs.
Each ml contains 2.0 mg dexamethasone (as dexamethasone sodium phosphate) and 15.0 mg benzyl alcohol (E-1519) as excipient.
