Profender is an internal antiparasitic tablet for dogs. It treats mixed infestations caused by nematodes such as Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, and Trichuris vulpis. It also treats cestodes including Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis, and Echinococcus granulosus.
Emodepside acts at the neuromuscular junction by stimulating presynaptic receptors of the secretin receptor family. This causes paralysis and death of the parasites. Praziquantel is rapidly absorbed from the parasite surface and changes calcium permeability of the parasite membranes. This leads to severe tegument damage, contraction, paralysis, metabolic disruption, and death.
A single dose is effective. Administer only on an empty stomach. Do not use in puppies under 12 weeks or under 1 kg body weight.
Each tablet for large dogs (30 kg) contains 150 mg praziquantel and 30 mg emodepside. Tablets for small dogs (3 kg) contain 15 mg praziquantel and 3 mg emodepside. Tablets for medium dogs (10 kg) contain 50 mg praziquantel and 10 mg emodepside.
