It works by stabilizing lysosomal membranes, preventing hydrolase release and destructive action. It also inhibits phospholipase, reducing arachidonic acid and PGE-2 production. This decreases collagen and fibroblast proliferation, capillary growth, neutrophil phagocytosis, and histamine release from mast cells.
The drug increases blood glucose and liver glycogen by mobilizing fats and catabolizing proteins. It causes sodium retention, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, and edema. In the cardiovascular system, it improves shock by stabilizing membranes and preventing lysosomal hydrolase and myocardial depressant factor release. In the musculoskeletal system, it causes potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen loss, leading to muscle weakness and osteoporosis risk.
Intramuscular absorption is 85%, with 90% reversibly bound to plasma proteins. Metabolism occurs mainly in the liver and less in kidneys, with plasma half-life of 18-36 hours.
