Reduces proteinuria and slows kidney disease progression in cats.
NELIO GATO 2.5mg is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor in oral tablet form. It treats chronic kidney disease in cats by reducing proteinuria. The active substance benazepril hydrochloride is a prodrug that converts to benazeprilat in the body.
Benazeprilat selectively and potently inhibits ACE, preventing the conversion of inactive angiotensin I to active angiotensin II. This reduces aldosterone synthesis, blocking vasoconstriction, sodium and water retention, and degenerative kidney changes. In cats with renal insufficiency, it normalizes elevated glomerular capillary pressure and reduces systemic blood pressure.
Reducing glomerular hypertension can slow the progression of kidney disease by inhibiting further kidney damage. In cats, treatment may cause a moderate increase in plasma creatinine concentrations, which is not necessarily a reason to stop treatment unless other adverse reactions occur.
Each tablet contains 2.5 mg of benazepril hydrochloride as the active ingredient.
For cats: reduction of proteinuria associated with chronic kidney disease. For dogs: treatment of congestive heart failure.
