Spectinomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and causing misreading of the genetic code. Lincomycin binds to the 50S subunit, blocking transfer RNA coupling. Lincomycin is primarily bacteriostatic but can be bactericidal at high concentrations. After oral administration, spectinomycin reaches peak blood levels in 1 hour, while lincomycin peaks in 2 to 4 hours.
The lincomycin and spectinomycin combination shows synergistic effects at 1:1 and 1:2 ratios, resulting in greater efficacy against various pathological processes than either agent alone.
