LACTOVET is indicated for the treatment of pseudopregnancy in female dogs and for the suppression of lactation. It is used after separation of puppies immediately after birth, early weaning, fetal death or abortion in late gestation, and lactation after ovariohysterectomy. These circumstances can lead to undesirable consequences such as mammary congestion and mastitis without treatment.
The active substance is cabergoline. Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist that inhibits prolactin secretion, thereby suppressing milk production and resolving pseudopregnancy symptoms.
Efficacy data shows that the standard course of 4 to 6 days of daily administration resolves clinical signs. Side effects are rare, transient, and moderate, including drowsiness, anorexia, and vomiting. Vomiting may occur only after the first administration and typically does not recur with subsequent doses.
