LACTOVET is indicated for the treatment of pseudopregnancy in bitches and for suppression of lactation in situations such as separation of pups immediately after birth, early weaning, fetal death or abortion in late gestation, and lactation after ovariohysterectomy. These conditions can lead to undesirable consequences including mammary congestion and mastitis if lactation is not inhibited.
The active substance is cabergoline, a dopamine agonist that inhibits prolactin secretion, thereby reducing milk production and resolving pseudopregnancy symptoms. The product is administered orally once daily for 4 to 6 consecutive days.
Clinical data show that side effects are rare, transient, and moderate. Possible effects include drowsiness, anorexia, and vomiting. Vomiting may occur after the first dose but typically does not recur with subsequent administrations. In case of overdose, vomiting can be antagonized with parenteral metoclopramide.
