FLOXABACTIN contains enrofloxacin, a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It treats upper respiratory tract infections in cats and lower urinary tract infections (with or without prostatitis) and upper urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli or Proteus mirabilis in dogs. It also treats superficial and deep pyoderma in dogs.
Enrofloxacin acts by inhibiting topoisomerase II, an enzyme involved in bacterial replication. It shows concentration-dependent bactericidal activity with similar minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values. It also affects bacteria in the stationary phase by altering the permeability of the outer phospholipid membrane of the cell wall.
Enrofloxacin is active against most Gram-negative bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., and Proteus spp. Pseudomonas aeruginosa susceptibility is variable. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius are usually susceptible. Streptococci, cocci, and anaerobic bacteria are generally resistant.
Each tablet contains 15 mg enrofloxacin. Other strengths: 50 mg and 150 mg enrofloxacin for dogs.
