It treats inflammatory processes, acute localized inflammations of the locomotor system such as arthritis, tendinitis, myositis, synovitis, and laminitis, as well as general trauma and postoperative pain. It does not interfere with wound healing.
The active ingredient, phenylbutazone, blocks the cyclooxygenase enzyme system, likely irreversibly, giving it anti-inflammatory effects in vivo. It is chemically related to aminopyrine and antipyrine.
Dosage is weight-based: Day 1: 4.4 mg/kg every 12 hours; Days 2-5: 2.2 mg/kg every 12 hours; Day 6 onward: 2.2 mg/kg every 24 hours. For a 500 kg horse, this equals 2 sachets every 12 hours on Day 1, then 1 sachet every 12 hours on Days 2-5, and 1 sachet every 24 hours from Day 6.
