Enrofloxacin exerts bactericidal activity by blocking bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and recombination. It is effective against the majority of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic. It distributes extensively into body fluids and tissues, reaching high concentrations in skin, bone, semen, and the eye, and crosses the placenta and blood-brain barrier. High levels in phagocytic cells make it effective against intracellular microorganisms such as rickettsia and mycoplasma.
The recommended dose is 5 mg/kg/day for 5 days. In chronic or severe cases, treatment may be extended up to 10 days. Excretion is primarily renal, making it ideal for urinary tract infections.
