80 mg/ml powder and solvent for solution for injection for Cats and Dogs
Antibacterial powder and solvent for injection solution

Laboratory
PFIZER, SA

Pharmaceutical form:
Powder and solvent for solution for injection (Polv.d.sol.i.)

Composition: by road:
Each vial of lyophilized powder contains: 852 mg cefovecin (as sodium salt).
When reconstituted according to label instructions, the solution for injection contains: cefovecin 80,0 mg/mL (as sodium salt); 1,8 mg/ml methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218); 0,2 mg/ml propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216); 12,3 mg/ml benzyl alcohol.

Pharmacological properties: Cefovecin is a third-generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram ( ) and Gram ( ) bacteria. It differs from other cephalosporins in that it is highly protein bound and has a long duration of activity. As with all cephalosporins, the action of cefovecin is due to inhibition of the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall; cefovecin has bactericidal activity.
Cefovecin has in vitro activity against Staphylococcus intermedius and Pasteurella multocida, which are associated with canine and feline skin infections. Anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides spp. were also shown to be susceptible. and Fusobacterium spp. collected from feline abscesses. Prophyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia, collected from canine periodontal disease, have also been shown to be susceptible. In addition, cefovecin exhibits in vitro activity against Escherichia coli which is associated with urinary tract infections of dogs and cats. Resistance to cephalosporins is due to enzymatic inactivation (β-lactamase production), also to decreased permeability due to porin mutations or changes in the discharge of said porins, or to a selection of low-affinity penicillin-binding proteins. Resistance can be chromosomal or plasmid-encoded and can be transferred if associated with transposons or plasmids. Cross-resistance with other cephalosporins and other beta-lactam antibacterials may be seen.

Interactions and incompatibilities:
Co-use with other substances that are highly protein bound (eg, furosemide, ketoconazole, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)) may compete with cefovecin binding and therefore may cause adverse effects. .

Indications and target species:
Dogs:
• For the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections including pyoderma, wounds, and abscesses associated with Staphylococcus intermedius, b-hemolytic Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and/or Pasteurella multocida.
• For the treatment of urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli and/or Proteus spp.
• As a complementary treatment to mechanical or surgical periodontal therapy, in the treatment of severe infections of the periodontal gingival tissue associated with Porphyromonas spp and Prevotella spp.
Cats:
• For the treatment of skin and soft tissue abscesses and wounds associated with Pasteurella multocida, Fusobacterium spp., Bacteroides spp., Prevotella oralis, b-hemolytic Streptococcus and/or Staphylococcus intermedius.
• For the treatment of urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli.

Contraindications:
• Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins.
• Do not use in small herbivores (including guinea pigs and rabbits).
• Do not use in dogs and cats less than 8 weeks of age.

Side effects:
Gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and/or diarrhoea, have been observed very rarely.

Route of administration:
subcutaneous.

Posology:
For infections that require prolonged treatment. The antimicrobial activity of Convenia, after a single injection, lasts up to 14 days.
• Skin and soft tissue infections in dogs: A single subcutaneous injection of 8 mg/kg body weight (1 ml per 10 kg body weight). If necessary, the treatment can be repeated at intervals of 14 days up to three more times. In accordance with good veterinary practice, treatment of pyoderma should extend beyond complete resolution of clinical signs.
• Severe infections of the gingival and periodontal tissues in dogs: a single subcutaneous injection of 8 mg/kg body weight (1 ml per 10 kg body weight).
• Abscesses and wounds on the skin and soft tissue in cats: A single subcutaneous injection of 8 mg/kg body weight (1 ml per 10 kg body weight). If necessary, an additional dose can be given 14 days after the first vaccination.
• Urinary tract infections in dogs and cats: A single subcutaneous injection of 8 mg/kg body weight (1 ml per 10 kg body weight).
• To reconstitute, extract 10 ml of the supplied diluent from its vial and add it to the vial containing the lyophilized powder. Shake the vial until the powder is observed to have completely dissolved.
• To ensure correct dosing, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible to avoid underdosing.

Special precautions:
• It is prudent to reserve 3rd generation cephalosporins for the treatment of cases with poor response, or that are expected to respond poorly, to antibiotics of other classes or first generation cephalosporins. The use of the product should be based on susceptibility testing and taking into account the official and local antimicrobial policy.
• The safety of Convenia has not been evaluated in animals with severe renal dysfunction.
Pyoderma is often secondary to an underlying disease. Therefore, it is advisable to determine the underlying cause and treat the animal accordingly.
• Care should be taken in patients who have previously shown hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactams. Severe acute hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with epinephrine and other emergency measures, including oxygen administration, intravenous fluids, intravenous antihistamines, corticosteroids, and airway therapy, when clinically indicated. Veterinarians should be aware that allergic symptoms may recur when symptomatic therapy is discontinued.

Wait time:
Not applicable.
