It is active against certain nematodes, cestodes, and Giardia spp. The fixed combination of pyrantel and febantel acts synergistically against nematodes including Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, and Trichuris vulpis, as well as Giardia spp. Praziquantel targets cestode species such as Taenia spp., Multiceps multiceps, Dipylidium caninum, Mesocestoides spp., Echinococcus granulosus, and Echinococcus multilocularis, including all intestinal stages.
The mechanism of action involves febantel inhibiting tubulin polymerization into microtubules. This disrupts metabolic and structural functions, depleting the parasite's energy reserves and killing it within 2 to 3 days. Praziquantel acts against all intestinal phases of cestodes and also has activity against Giardia spp.
