Treats skin infections, wounds, abscesses, and urinary tract infections in dogs and cats.
CONVENIA is indicated for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections in dogs, including pyoderma, wounds, and abscesses associated with Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus beta hemolytic, Escherichia coli, and/or Pasteurella multocida. It also treats urinary tract infections in dogs associated with Escherichia coli and/or Proteus spp. In cats, it is used as adjunctive therapy for certain infections.
The active substance cefovecin is a third generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bactericidal activity. Cefovecin has high protein binding and a long duration of action.
In vitro, cefovecin shows activity against Staphylococcus intermedius and Pasteurella multocida, which are associated with canine and feline skin infections. Anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides spp. and Fusobacterium spp. from feline abscesses, as well as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia from canine periodontal disease, are also susceptible. Additionally, cefovecin is active against Escherichia coli from canine and feline urinary tract infections.
Each vial contains 852 mg cefovecin (as sodium salt). After reconstitution, the solution contains 80.0 mg/mL cefovecin (as sodium salt), 1.8 mg/mL methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), 0.2 mg/mL propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), and 12.3 mg/mL benzyl alcohol.
In dogs, CONVENIA treats skin and soft tissue infections including pyoderma, wounds, and abscesses caused by Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus beta hemolytic, Escherichia coli, and/or Pasteurella multocida. It also treats urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli and/or Proteus spp. In cats, it is used as adjunctive therapy.
