Long-acting third-generation cephalosporin for skin, urinary, and periodontal infections.
CONVENIA is indicated for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections in dogs, including pyoderma, wounds, and abscesses associated with Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus beta-hemolytic, Escherichia coli, and Pasteurella multocida. It also treats urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli and Proteus spp. in dogs. In cats, it treats skin infections and abscesses. As a complementary therapy, it is used for severe periodontal gingival tissue infections associated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia in dogs.
The active substance cefovecin is a third-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, providing bactericidal activity. It has a high protein binding rate and a long duration of action. Cefovecin shows in vitro activity against Staphylococcus intermedius, Pasteurella multocida, anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides spp. and Fusobacterium spp. from feline abscesses, and Escherichia coli from canine and feline urinary tract infections.
Resistance to cephalosporins can occur through enzymatic inactivation (beta-lactamase production), reduced permeability via porin mutations, altered porin efflux, or selection of low-affinity penicillin-binding proteins. Resistance may be chromosomal or plasmid-mediated and can transfer via transposons or plasmids. Cross-resistance with other cephalosporins and beta-lactam antibacterials may occur.
Each vial contains 852 mg cefovecin (as sodium salt). After reconstitution, the solution contains 80.0 mg/ml cefovecin, 1.8 mg/ml methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), 0.2 mg/ml propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), and 12.3 mg/ml benzyl alcohol.
For dogs: treatment of skin and soft tissue infections including pyoderma, wounds, and abscesses associated with Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus beta-hemolytic, Escherichia coli, and Pasteurella multocida; treatment of urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli and Proteus spp.; complementary treatment to mechanical or surgical periodontal therapy for severe periodontal gingival infections associated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. For cats: treatment of skin infections and abscesses.
