The active ingredient metergoline is a synthetic ergoline derivative that acts as an antiprolactin agent. It works by antagonizing serotonin, which is responsible for prolactin secretion.
Treatment is given orally for 8 days. Complete cures are generally observed by the fourth day. Mild vomiting or diarrhea may occur at the start but resolve quickly and do not require stopping treatment. Signs of excitement or hyperactivity have also been reported.
Dosage is 0.20 mg metergoline per kg body weight per day, divided into two doses. For small dogs weighing 2.5 to 3 kg, give 1 tablet of Contralac 5 per day. For dogs 3.5 to 6 kg, give 1 tablet morning and evening. For dogs 6.5 to 8 kg, give 2 tablets in the morning and 1 in the evening. For dogs over 8 kg, use the divisible Contralac 20 tablets.
