The active substance, metergoline, is a synthetic ergoline derivative that acts as an antiprolactin agent. Its activity is based primarily on antagonism against serotonin, the substance responsible for prolactin secretion.
Treatment is recommended for 8 days, although complete cures are generally observed after the fourth day. The dosage is 0.20 mg of metergoline per kg of body weight per day, divided into two doses. For small dogs, specific dosing guidelines are provided using CONTRALAC-5 tablets.
Possible side effects include mild vomiting or diarrhea at the start of treatment, which resolve quickly and do not justify discontinuation. Signs of excitement and hyperactivity have also been described.
