The active ingredient enrofloxacin exerts its bactericidal effect by interacting with the A subunit of bacterial DNA gyrase, causing irreversible degradation of chromosomal DNA and blocking replication, transcription, and recombination. This mechanism is concentration dependent. Fluoroquinolones also act on bacteria in the stationary phase by altering cell membrane permeability.
Enrofloxacin has relatively high oral bioavailability. Fluoroquinolones diffuse extensively into body fluids and tissues, reaching concentrations higher than plasma in some sites. Metabolism varies by species around 50-60 percent. Excretion is biliary and renal, with renal being predominant.
