It contains amoxicillin (a beta lactam antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a beta lactamase inhibitor) which together provide a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative aerobes, facultative anaerobes, and strict anaerobes, including beta lactamase producing strains.
Amoxicillin works by preventing bacterial cell wall formation, interfering with the final stage of peptidoglycan synthesis. Clavulanic acid irreversibly inhibits intracellular and extracellular beta lactamases, protecting amoxicillin from inactivation. The combination has shown efficacy against Streptococcus spp., Pasteurellaceae, Escherichia coli, and Enterobacteriaceae in canine periodontal infections.
