CLAVASEPTIN is indicated for the treatment or adjunctive treatment of periodontal infections in dogs caused by bacteria sensitive to amoxicillin in combination with clavulanic acid. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid provides a broad antibacterial spectrum including Gram positive and Gram negative aerobes, facultative anaerobes, and strict anaerobes.
Amoxicillin is an aminobenzylpenicillin that prevents bacterial cell wall formation by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis. Clavulanic acid is an irreversible inhibitor of beta lactamases, protecting amoxicillin from inactivation. After oral administration at the recommended dose in dogs, absorption of both amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is rapid. Peak plasma concentration of amoxicillin is 8.5 µg/ml reached in 1.4 hours, and peak plasma concentration of clavulanic acid is 0.9 µg/ml reached in 0.9 hours. No accumulation occurs with repeated dosing.
