Cephalexin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis to treat skin infections.
CEFASEPTIN 750 mg tablets treat bacterial skin infections in dogs. The active ingredient, cephalexin, is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting nucleopeptide synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It interferes with transpeptidation enzymes, preventing cross linking of peptidoglycans, which weakens the cell wall and leads to cell lysis and filament formation.
Cephalexin is active against most aerobic Gram positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus spp., and Gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. According to CLSI breakpoints for dogs, a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 µg/mL or less indicates susceptibility, 4 µg/mL indicates intermediate susceptibility, and 8 µg/mL or more indicates resistance.
Resistance to cephalexin can occur through production of cephalosporinases that hydrolyze the beta lactam ring, decreased affinity of penicillin binding proteins (PBPs), efflux pumps that expel the antibiotic, or structural changes in porins that reduce diffusion. Cross resistance exists among beta lactam antibiotics due to structural similarities and beta lactamase enzymes.
Each tablet contains cephalexin (as cephalexin monohydrate) 750 mg. Excipients: lactose monohydrate, povidone K30, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, porcine liver powder, yeast, crospovidone, sodium stearyl fumarate.
