ATOPICA is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and antipruritic treatment for chronic atopic dermatitis in dogs. It contains cyclosporine, a selective immunosuppressant that targets T lymphocytes.
Cyclosporine inhibits T cell activation and blocks cytokine production like IL-2. It interferes with skin immune function, reduces histamine release, and limits mast cell degranulation. This decreases eosinophil activation and Langerhans cell function, reducing inflammation and itching.
Clinical improvement is typically seen within 4 weeks of daily dosing. If no improvement occurs within 8 weeks, treatment should be discontinued. Maintenance dosing can be reduced to alternate days or every 3 to 4 days once symptoms are controlled.
