The active ingredient amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin. It prevents the formation of bridges between linear polymer chains that make up the peptidoglycan cell wall in Gram positive bacteria. It also acts against a limited range of Gram negative bacteria.
Resistance to beta lactams occurs through three main mechanisms: beta lactamase production, altered penicillin binding protein expression, and decreased outer membrane penetration. Cross resistance exists between amoxicillin and other penicillins, especially aminopenicillins.
