ADVOCATE is a topical spot-on solution for dogs. It treats and prevents infestations by fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), and circulating microfilariae (Dirofilaria immitis). It also treats sarcoptic mange, demodicosis, chewing lice, and gastrointestinal nematodes including Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, and Trichuris vulpis. It prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis L3/L4 larvae), subcutaneous dirofilariosis (Dirofilaria repens L3), spirocercosis, and angiostrongylosis.
Imidacloprid (10%) is a chloronicotinyl ectoparasiticide effective against flea larvae and adults. It distributes rapidly over the skin within the first day. Moxidectin (2.5%) is a milbemycin macrocyclic lactone active against internal and external parasites, including Dirofilaria immitis larvae (L3, L4) and gastrointestinal nematodes. It absorbs through the skin and reaches peak plasma concentrations 4 to 9 days after application in dogs, then clears slowly.
No other macrocyclic lactone antiparasitics should be given during treatment. ADVOCATE can cause transient pruritus. Rarely, greasy hair, erythema, vomiting, or local hypersensitivity reactions occur. If the dog licks the application site, transient neurological signs are rarely observed. The medication has a bitter taste.
Each pipette contains 10% imidacloprid and 2.5% moxidectin, plus butylhydroxytoluene.
