ADVOCATE is a spot-on solution for dogs weighing 4 to 10 kilograms. It treats and prevents flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), and circulating microfilariae (Dirofilaria immitis). It also prevents heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis L3/L4 larvae), subcutaneous dirofilariosis (Dirofilaria repens L3 larvae), spirocercosis (Spirocerca lupi), and angiostrongylosis (Angiostrongylus vasorum L4 larvae and immature adults). The product reduces circulating microfilariae (Dirofilaria repens) and treats gastrointestinal nematode infections (Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis). It also treats chewing lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis), demodicosis (Demodex canis), and infections by Angiostrongylus vasorum and Crenosoma vulpis. Strategic treatment of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is included.
Imidacloprid, an ectoparasiticide from the chloronicotinyl group, acts against flea larvae and adults with minimal pharmacological activity in mammals. It distributes rapidly over the animal's skin within the first day of application. Moxidectin, a milbemycin family parasiticide (macrocyclic lactone), is active against many internal and external parasites, including Dirofilaria immitis larvae (L3, L4) and gastrointestinal nematodes. It absorbs through the skin and reaches peak plasma concentrations in dogs approximately 4 to 9 days after application, then clears slowly from the plasma.
Clinical studies support efficacy against the listed parasites. The product is applied topically as a spot-on solution. Do not use in puppies under 7 weeks old or in animals hypersensitive to the active substances or any excipient. Do not use in canaries. Transient pruritus may occur. Rarely, greasy hair, erythema, or vomiting may appear and resolve without treatment. Local hypersensitivity reactions are rare. If the animal licks the application site, transient neurological signs may rarely be observed. The medication has a bitter taste.
