ADVOCATE is a spot-on solution for dogs that treats and prevents flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), and circulating microfilariae (Dirofilaria immitis). It also prevents heartworm (L3/L4 larvae of Dirofilaria immitis), subcutaneous dirofilariosis (L3 larvae of Dirofilaria repens), spirocercosis (Spirocerca lupi), and angiostrongylosis (L4 larvae and immature adults of Angiostrongylus vasorum). The product reduces circulating microfilariae of Dirofilaria repens and treats gastrointestinal nematode infections including Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxascaris leonina, and Trichuris vulpis. It also treats chewing lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis), demodicosis (Demodex canis), and infections by Angiostrongylus vasorum and Crenosoma vulpis. Strategic treatment of flea allergic dermatitis (FAD) is also indicated.
The active ingredients are imidacloprid (10%) and moxidectin (2.5%). Imidacloprid is a chloronicotinyl ectoparasiticide effective against flea larvae and adults, with minimal pharmacological activity in mammals. It spreads rapidly over the dog's skin within the first day after application. Moxidectin is a milbemycin (macrocyclic lactone) active against many internal and external parasites, including L3/L4 larvae of Dirofilaria immitis and gastrointestinal nematodes. It is absorbed through the skin and distributed systemically, reaching maximum plasma concentrations in about 4 to 9 days in dogs. It is eliminated slowly from plasma.
